Premium Car Detailing by the Expert Team

Auto Detailing is the practice of performing an extremely thorough cleaning and polishing of an automobile, both inside and out, to produce a show-quality level of detail. Main goals are typically beautification, but can also touch other areas such as minor paint repair, protection and sealant, surface restoration, as well as thoroughly cleaning areas which are normally ignored.

The term polish is thrown around loosely in our industry. For our purposes, a paint polish is a product used to remove small amounts of the paint’s surface. Don’t worry, this is at a microscopic level and will not mess with the integrity of your paint film build. The cutting ability of the polish will determine the amount of paint removed with each hand stroke or each revolution of a buffer, as well as the resulting finish. A fine polish will create a deep, wet-looking gloss, whereas a coarse polish may cloud the paint’s surface.

Before working on the whole vehicle, we always recommend doing a test spot on the worst area of the vehicle. Always start with the least aggressive product first and see if it is doing what you want it to do. If not, step up to a more aggressive product and pad. Then use your next products and procedures and complete the entire process to see if it meets your expectations.

When you are finished with the test spot, and you are happy with the results, do the entire vehicle! If not, it is time to go back to step one and re-evaluate your expectations and variables that come in to play.

Polishing your Automobile to Reveal its best Shine

Your ride’s paint is bombarded by contaminants and assaulted by foreign objects every day. These are the things that make your finish look less than perfect and can’t be avoided if you want to drive your ride. Polishing your ride removes defects like swirl, etching, scratches and oxidation while enhancing gloss and preparing your ride for the protection it needs and deserves.

Polishing your automobile several times per year will help to extend the life and beauty of the paint and exterior. Polishing is the oft forgotten step between washing and waxing, but when done properly, it completely revitalizes the automobile’s exterior finish. A thorough automobile polishing will remove firmly bonded surface contaminants and subsurface paint defects, and will preserve its shine.

Your vehicle surface must be absolutely clean before you polish it. If there is any dirt on the vehicle when you begin polishing, polishing will scrub the dirt across your finish and scratch it more. Some people probably think washing the vehicle thoroughly before polishing is good enough, but we want to clay-bar it before polishing, too, so that we will be starting with the cleanest possible surface.

Apply polish or wax (if using both, apply and remove polish first) with a dual-action polisher or orbital buffer or by hand. Rotary buffers should be left to the professionals. Polish is for a glossy look. Wax and Sealant is a protectant. Use in length-wise sections. Do not move the machine in a circular pattern. The outer edge of the pad moves faster, generating more friction than the center, and it usually carries less polish—a recipe for a burned finish. Pay attention to doorjambs, around door hinges and behind bumpers, which you will need to do in a circular motion by hand.

While the wax or sealant is drying, clean the other areas of the vehicle (windows, interior, etc.) and then remove the wax with a microfiber towel—bath towels or rags may mar the surface.  Apply touch-up paint to chips and any lingering scratches as needed. Move the vehicle into sunlight for a final inspection.

When Does your Ride need a Polish and Wax?

Your car or truck deserves to look the way it did in the showroom. Elite has the exterior detailing solutions necessary to walk back the effects of thousands of miles and restore the shine on your vehicle’s chrome, trim, wheels, tires, glass and more.

Often it takes more than just a wash to get your paint clean. Bird droppings and man-made pollutants settle on the paint and, after a while, can saturate through wax and clear coatings into the color coat underneath. With your ride still out of the sun, run your dry hand across the surface of the paint. If it feels rough, it needs to be cleaned.

The purpose of polish is to smooth the surface of the paint, which will make it shine and help your ride look newer. (Some polishes contain wax, which also protects the paint, but the wax doesn’t smooth the paint itself.) When you polish your paint, you can use an oscillating polishing machine. The pros use a rotating polishing machine, which works faster but will harm the paint if you’re not careful.

Between paint cleanings and wax applications, you’ll find you’ve picked up stains and scratches. Using liquid spray wax that can touch up these spots between waxings is a good idea but not a substitute for a real wax coating. Because there is no definitive way to tell when wax has worn off, stick to a schedule: Give your vehicle a wax job every season if the vehicle spends every day outdoors.

Polish not only gives the finish its gloss, but it feeds the paint with oils to prevent it from drying out. Polymers in the polish fill in minute scratches in the clear-coat layer, restoring its clarity. If you machine-buff the polish/wax to a high luster, go with an orbital rather than a rotary model, which would be more likely to burn the paint.

The Next Generation of Vehicle Grooming

Polishing is one of the best ways to improve your finish, but it’s also one of the quickest ways to scratch the heck out of it if you aren’t careful, so you should proceed with caution! There is lots of misunderstanding about what a polish is. This is compounded by the fact that various manufacturers use the words “polish” and “wax” loosely (or just plain wrong) for marketing purposes. A true polish is an abrasive compound that you rub on the finish of your ride to make the finish smoother. Polishes range from quite abrasive, for removing heavy oxidation and similar problems, to barely abrasive at all, for the final step in making the finish as smooth as possible. The polish itself provides no protection; it just makes the surface smoother. Some waxes (notably “cleaner waxes”) contain some amount of polish, and those waxes tend to give the average automobile a better shine because the average automobile’s finish has been neglected and could use some polishing! If the polish you use is truly a polish, you’ll still need to wax your ride after you polish it.

Detailing other Parts of Your Vehicle

Remove floor mats and vacuum the mats, floor, trunk, upholstery, rear parcel shelf, if you have one, and the dash. Slide the seats all the way forward and then back to thoroughly vacuum the carpet underneath. Start from the top and work your way down. Dust or dirt that has accumulated up top could fall down; dust or dirt that has accumulated at the bottom will rarely fall up.

The dashboard presents a special challenge, with buttons, crevices and bezels that you can’t get to with a cleaning rag. You can blast dust and dirt from these areas by using small cans of compressed air made for cleaning camera and computer equipment. Cotton swabs also work well here. Pay attention to the cleaning products you use on your dashboard.

Clean the outside of windows with glass cleaner. The glass on newly-detailed cars should shine and reflect, not be dull and grimy.

You’ll get the best look if you buff glass with a microfiber cloth, which does a great job of getting rid of cleaner residue. That residue, as well as oils from your skin, causes streaks and spots on the inside of windows. Clean glass also looks great. To reach the inside of the rear window on sedans and coupes, use the back of your hand with the microfiber cloth and you’ll find you can get much farther down the glass.
